‘Securing Gender Equality: Iran and the CSW’
While protesters are beaten and shot at in Iran, the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is scheduled to convene its fifty-fifth session in New York from February 22 – March 4, 20
The current Iranian regime is an extreme abuser of women’s rights. Iranian authorities have increased patrols in Tehran, arresting women wearing clothes the regime considers improper. Iran’s interior minister has promised a “chastity plan” to promote the regime’s definition of proper covering for women “from kindergarten to families.” Each day, more and more women are becoming victims of stoning after being accused of violating Shari ‘a law. Some are publicly hung.
The Iranian Constitution includes discriminatory provisions which dictate that the husband has the right to control his wife’s freedom of movement and behavior; and, which empowers the husband to forbid his wife from accepting a job.
Iran 2011: All Rights Reserved?, a coalition of 11 human rights and dissidents groups, will convene for a side event and a rally in front of the UN building demanding stronger and immediate UN action condemning Iran’s human right record.
