EMP Event Horizon: The Point of No Return?

Merriam-Webster online defines an “event horizon” as “the boundary of a black hole beyond which nothing can escape from within it.”   The Free Dictionary describes it as “the region, usually described as spherical, marking the outer boundary of a black hole, inside which the gravitational force is strong enough to prevent matter or radiation from escaping.”  A quote from Wikipedia is perhaps more interesting: “In layman’s terms it is defined as ‘the point of no return’ i.e. the point at which the gravitational pull becomes so great as to make escape impossible. The most common case of an event horizon is that surrounding a black hole. Light emitted from beyond the horizon can never reach the observer.”

A black hole is known to be a rather frightening “region of spacetime” which absorbs (or “swallows”) everything unfortunate enough to venture past its event horizon.  The actual event horizon isn’t the scariest part of this picture.  If put into a descriptive context more general than the conventional “black hole” scenario, however, the label “event horizon” could itself seem chilling.

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) event caused by a high-altitude nuclear explosion, for instance, could flip the visual-a real black hole sucks matter inward toward a central “spacetime singularity,” but a high-altitude nuclear explosion would emit a pulse of gamma rays 360 degrees (line of sight) from the blast toward the earth, forming an “ejected” event horizon determined largely by the altitude of the blast.  Thus, a single nuclear detonation approximately 275-300 miles above Kansas City would form a land-based “black hole” (the area within which the electric grid and other infrastructure elements collapse, long-term) with an event horizon that could encompass the entire United States, the north of Mexico, and southern portions of Canada.

emp schematic       emp usa map

In a manner similar to the mouth of a black hole, the larger the radius of the ground area affected, the more resources are gobbled up.  The geographic location encircled by the event horizon in a post-EMP attack world would go dark in more ways than one-especially if the weapon of choice is a super or advanced EMP (a much more devastating weapon).  It would be hell-on-earth for months, if not years afterward, if unprepared.   Over two-thirds of the population would die within the first year according to the Congressional EMP Commission; and some experts place that estimate closer to 90%.

Adding to the nightmare, nuclear power plants would, within days, run out of diesel fuel for the generators which are needed to continuously cool their spent-fuel rods, many of which are stacked in pools that may or may not be collocated with the power plants.  The point of exposure of these rods could be likened to the Japanese Fukushima Daiichi disaster, and yes – to Chernobyl.

Indeed, “light emitted from beyond the horizon”-in this case, outside the event horizon-might “never reach the observer” on the inside; although the result of multiple Chernobyl-like crises might provide a terrifying form of light that no sane person would ever want to see.  Considering the potential destruction of the electric grid, followed by the collapse of interdependent infrastructures (communications, transportation, financial and govt. services, etc.), physical escape would be most desirable, but virtually impossible for the vast majority. It would be safe to assume that few, if any of our allies would (or could) come to our aid – and any attack scenario must presume the presence of a prepositioned, armed internal contingent, fully prepared to take kinetic action and/or to sit out the worst of the aftermath until victory over the remaining populous could be easily achieved.

Unfortunately, very similar scenarios can be caused by geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) resulting from large coronal mass ejections (CME).  These stunningly beautiful solar eruptions (the CMEs), when directed at Earth, have been known to destroy or otherwise initiate irreversible injury to the large, extra-high voltage (EHV) transformers that are crucial to the structure and operation of the electric grid.  Even if damage is not readily apparent after a solar superstorm, festering or cumulative injuries from multiple events could eventually cause transformer failure for which replacement is the only option.  Extra-high voltage transformers are virtually impossible to replace in a time-sensitive manner-especially if hundreds are destroyed simultaneously.

Regardless of cause (nuclear or CME), while individuals within the event horizon will probably not immediately implode as if they were heading toward a spacetime singularity, society will certainly begin to do so. Starvation, disease, exposure and a normal survival instinct, combined with a lack of understanding as to the true nature of the catastrophe can lead to a vortex of increasing societal chaos-a huge black hole, albeit in different context.

Could we escape?  If we protect and defend the most critical parts of the electric grid, either by retrofitting transformers with inexpensive blocking devices, or by “install[ing] capacitors at the neutral-to-ground juncture,” we could reduce downtime following such an event to a manageable level.  Passage of legislation such as The Shield Act (H.R. 668) would provide a mandate for action to be taken by the power industry and open avenues for collaboration on related homeland defense issues.  But whether or not efforts to mitigate the worst effects are taken by government and industry, communities and individuals need to prepare for the possibility of a long-term “grid-down” environment. If families were to take it upon themselves to ensure their own survival-as families have done in the relatively recent past-recovery time could be hastened and our prospects for survival as a nation could be vastly improved.

This is one national security issue with which everyone could truly become involved-by helping yourselves, your families, neighbors and communities-and by pressing government and industry leaders for legislation and protection of our electric lifeline.  In so doing, we might be able to ensure a less formidable event horizon following an EMP or GMD, dispelling the notion that such an event would mean the creation of a “point of no return.”  There is even a possibility that we could achieve the ultimate goal-to keep a land-based black hole-whether the result of an attack or an act of nature-from forming in the first place.

North Korea Claims To Have ‘Modern’ Weapons Capable Of ‘Defeating’ US

A senior North Korean military officer has claimed that Pyongyang is equipped with “powerful modern weapons” capable of “defeating” the US. This declaration coincides with speculation that the reclusive Asian nation may be planning to conduct a nuclear test, following its failed rocket launch on April 13.

Vice Marshal Ri Yong Ho has claimed his nation is a nuclear and military power and that its 20-something leader Kim Jong Un is a “military strategist.”

“The Korean People’s Army is armed with powerful modern weapons… that can defeat the imperialists (US) at a single blow,” he told in a meeting attended by party and military officials Wednesday, the Associated Press reported. The chief didn’t disclose any further details about the weapons.

The closed meeting at the House of Culture, attended by Kim Jong Un, the third from the Kim dynasty to rule North Korea, marked the 80th anniversary of the army’s founding.

Pyongyang drew heavy international criticism when it decided to test a long-range missile on April 13, reportedly aimed at boosting its defense to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of striking the US. North’s ambitious attempt to launch the Unha-3 rocket failed when it broke apart shortly after takeoff.

Speculation is rife that North Korea is nearing completion of preparations to test a nuclear device for the third time after two attempts in 2006 and 2009, an unnamed source with close ties to Pyongyang and Beijing told Reuters.

Observers have said that North Korea may have developed the capabilities to test a nuclear weapon using highly enriched uranium, which has raised concerns in Washington, Seoul and Tokyo.

The source didn’t specify whether uranium or a limited supply of plutonium would be used in the test.

US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, speaking to reporters during a trip to Brasilia, said he had no specific information on whether North Korea would go ahead with a test, Reuters reported.

“But I again would strongly urge them not to engage in any kind of provocation – be it nuclear testing or any other act – that would provide greater instability in a dangerous part of the world,” he said.

Beijing has, meanwhile, shifted its stance regarding Pyongyang’s widely panned rocket launch. China‘s senior-most diplomat showered praise on Kim Jong-Un and promised to strengthen ties with North Korea in a meeting with Kim Yong-il, the Korean Workers’ Party director of international affairs, Sunday.

“The traditional friendship between China and North Korea is a precious treasure for our two parties, two countries and our peoples,” Dai told Kim Yong-il, who visited Beijing. “China is willing to work with North Korea to take friendly cooperation to new heights.”

China, considered North’s biggest ally, had condemned the launch along with other world powers in a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) statement, but has been ignoring calls for harsher sanctions on the North Korean regime.

Panetta told US lawmakers last week that China had assisted in North Korea’s missile program, but said he did not know the “exact extent of that.”

However, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin denied the US claims, saying that “China is always against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and the carrier equipment of such weapons.”

Iranian Nuke Attack on US Easy as ‘EMP’?

WASHINGTON — Pentagon estimates show that Iran could have missiles capable of reaching the East Coast of the United States by the year 2015.

If the Iranians acquire a nuclear bomb, they might be able to cripple their “Great Satan” even sooner through an electromagnetic pulse — or EMP – attack off America’s coastline.

“Within a year of an EMP event, at least two-thirds of the American population would perish from starvation, disease and societal collapse. It’s a high-tech means of killing people the old fashioned way,” said Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, president of EMPact America.

A nuclear weapon detonated above the U.S. would emit powerful electromagnetic pulses, frying America’s electrical grid and shutting down necessities from cars to computers to airplanes and refrigerators.

Iranian military handbooks point out the benefits of such an attack. Russia, China and North Korea also possess EMP technology.

Pry, a member of the congressional EMP Commission, says America could plunge back into the 19th century, with Katrina-like chaos nationwide.

“A single nuclear weapon will cause the collapse of the electric power grid, all the critical infrastructures and other electronic systems across the entire continental United States and basically cause a permanent blackout,” he told CBN News.

Pry’s nightmare scenario shows Iran or its terrorist proxy, Hezbollah, parking an unmarked freighter off America’s East Coast or in the Gulf of Mexico.

They would fire a nuclear-tipped scud above a city like New York, then immediately sink the freighter to destroy evidence of their handiwork.

“Even if we were able to identify the scud by our radars, we wouldn’t be able to identify who did it,” he explained. “This is a way of keeping your fingerprints off it.”

Former CIA double agent Reza Kahlili spent time as a member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps. He says the Iranians have conducted missiles tests off ships in the Caspian Sea, which are consistent with an EMP-style attack.

“They’re going to get to the Gulf of Mexico with ballistic missiles, and they’re going to launch one at a moment’s notice. And they wouldn’t care about the repercussions,” he told CBN News.

Kahlili’s book, A Time to Betray, details Iran’s rapidly advancing ballistic missile program.

“They have obtained missiles from North Korea that can now target the capitals of Europe,” Kahlili said.

There are reports that Iran plans to establish missiles bases in Venezuela, where it has a vast network. And an Iranian official recently threatened to send military ships to patrol America’s Atlantic coast.

Legislation is currently pending in Congress that would harden America’s electrical grid against an EMP attack.

Sponsors of the bill, called the SHIELD Act, say it would cost less than $1 billion to do it. But the bill has yet to pass.

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

Two congressional commissions, the EMP Commission and the Strategic Posture Commission, have warned that terrorists, rogue states (such as Iran), China and Russia could, using a single crude nuclear weapon delivered by a primitive missile, inflict an EMP attack that would cause the collapse of critical civilian infrastructures — such as electric power, telecommunications, transportation, banking and finance, food and water — across the entire continental United States. These are vital for the sustenance of our modern society and the survival of its citizens.

EMPact America has been at the forefront of raising awareness and educating our public officials of the need to pass the SHIELD Act, to amend the Federal Power Act to protect the bulk-power system and electric infrastructure critical to the defense and well-being of the United States against natural and manmade electromagnetic pulse (“EMP”) threats and vulnerabilities.

I urge every citizen of this great nation of ours to take action in raising awareness and to demand that President Obama and the legislators take immediate action to pass the SHIELD Act (H.R. 668).

PRESIDENT OBAMA:

PLEASE ISSUE AN EXECUTIVE ORDER TO PROTECT OUR NATION FROM LONG-TERM DISASTER

DEAR MR. PRESIDENT:

WE URGE YOU SIGN THE EXECUTIVE ORDER THAT WAS PREPARED BY THE EMP COMMISSION, WHICH OUTLINES A PLAN FOR PROTECTING OUR NATION’S VULNERABLE ELECTRIC GRID AND PREVENTING A GRID-DOWN SITUATION.

TWO BI-PARTISAN CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEES HAVE DONE EXTENSIVE WORK IN STUDYING THE EMP THREAT, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES OF SCIENCE AND THE STRATEGIC POSTURE COMMISSION, AND PRESENTED THIS EXECUTIVE ORDER, WHICH THE PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION FAILED TO ACT ON.

YOU HAVE DEMONSTRATED EXTRAORDINARY LEADERSHIP BY AUTHORIZING THE MISSION TO GET OSAMA BIN LADEN.  WE HOPE YOU ALSO UNDERSTAND THE URGENCY OF PROVIDING SIMILAR LEADERSHIP BY SIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING THIS  EXECUTIVE ORDER TO PROTECT OUR CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE FROM ADVERSARIAL AND NATURAL THREATS.

AN ELECTROMAGNETIC PULSE ATTACK OR A GREATGEOMAGNETIC STORM, COULD RESULT IN A NATIONWIDE CATASTROPHIC COLLAPSE OF OUR ELECTRIC GRID.

AT THIS TIME, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE NOT PROTECTED IN THE EVENT OF A THREAT TO OUR ELECTRIC GRID. A NUCLEAR OR NATURAL EMP IS PERHAPS THE MOST CATACLYSMIC THREAT, AND THE MOST URGENT PRIORITY, OF OUR TIME:

SEVERAL COUNTRIES HAVE ACCESS TO NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY AND SOME SUCH AS NORTH KOREA AND IRAN HAVE WRITTEN IN THEIR MILITARY DOCTRINE OF THEIR DESIRE TO USE AN EMP AGAINST THE US

- OUR COUNTRY HAS BEEN THREATENED WITH A HIGH-ALTITUDE NUCLEAR ATTACK.

- YOU HAVE RECOGNIZED THE POSSIBILITY OF CYBER ATTACKS, AND

- WE ALL HAVE SEEN THE INCREASE IN SOLAR ACTIVITY.

- ALL OF THESE FACTORS CAN THREATEN OUR ELECTRIC GRID AND, THUS, THE SAFETY OF ALL AMERICANS.

THIS IS A NON-PARTISAN ISSUE, AND AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU, MR. PRESIDENT, TO DEMONSTRATE YOUR CONCERN FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL AMERICANS, BY SIGNING THE EXECUTIVE ORDER ON THIS ISSUE THAT WILL BEGIN THE PROCESS OF PROTECTING OUR ELECTRIC GRID AND THAT, EQUALLY IMPORTANTLY, WILL SEND A MESSAGE OF HOPE TO OUR ENTIRE NATION.

EMPact America and The Need to Pass The SHIELD Act (H.R. 668)

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

It is an honor to announce my collaboration as a Senior Fellow with EMPact  America.

EMPact America is a bipartisan organization of citizens concerned about protecting the American people from a nuclear or natural electromagnetic pulse (EMP) catastrophe.

Two congressional commissions, the EMP Commission and the Strategic Posture Commission, have warned that terrorists, rogue states, China and Russia could, using a single crude nuclear weapon delivered by a primitive missile, inflict an EMP attack that would cause the collapse of critical civilian infrastructures — such as electric power, telecommunications, transportation, banking and finance, food and water — across the entire continental United States.

I will soon put out a new column that urges all Americans to pressure our politicians into protecting America’s infrastructures before it will be too late for all of us.

It is interesting that the Iranian website Gerdab.ir, which is run by the Revolutionary Guards, yesterday ran an editorial titled “With an Attack by Iran, The Life Will End in America,” analyzing my recent article in the Washington Times (“KAHLILI: Iranian missiles could soon reach U.S. shores”). Without denying its facts, the Iranian editorial states that the Western media is worried about Iran’s progress in developing the capability to launch an attack on America from international waters. The editorial mentions EMPact America and Dr. Peter Vincent Pry’s statement, reflected in my Times article, about the nightmare scenario of an EMP attack by Iran that, without leaving a fingerprint, could destroy America’s infrastructure and American lives.

The Jihadists ruling Iran are preparing for the demise of America. The time for action is now. We can no longer vacillate.

Get informed. Contact your representative and senator and ask for the passage of the SHIELD Act (HR 668), currently before the House, so that America’s vital grid components will be protected.
