New Computer Virus Threatening Iranian Installations

The Iranian Intelligence Minister, Heidar Moslahi today warned of the threat of the new computer virus named Stars.

According to reports from Iran, the minister warned the government bodies about this new virus.

The virus can interrupt the computer systems of the state bodies, but the country will take the same measure like before, Moslehi told reporters after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Previously on April 25, commander Gholamreza Jalali, the head of the Iranian Passive Defense Organization stated that they have identified the particular characteristics of Stars Malware and that the virus is compatible and harmonious with the computer system and in the initial phase it does minor damage and might be mistaken for some executive files of government organizations.

Stars is the second computer worm to target Iran in the past eight months.

In September 2010, international news agencies reported that the Stuxnet worm, which is capable of taking over power plants, had infected many industrial sites in Iran.

Later, Western officials and media outlets claimed that the cyber attack had hindered Iran’s nuclear program.

Iranian officials confirmed that some Iranian industrial systems had been targeted by a cyber attack, but insisted that no crashes or serious damage to the country’s industrial computer systems had been reported and said Iranian engineers had rooted out the problem.

Iran also dismissed the claim that the cyber attack had seriously affected its nuclear program.
