Iran Releases Two Kuwaitis Accused Of Spying

December 18, 2011

Iranian media say that two Kuwaitis detained In Iran for spying last month have been cleared of their charges and released.

The semi-official Mehr news agency quoted Iran’s ambassador to Kuwait, Ruhollah Qahremani, as saying the men had illegally worked as journalists in Iran while travelling on tourist visas, but speculation they were spies had been wrong.

The arrests of the two men last month took place amid tense relations between Shi’ite Muslim Iran and its Sunni Arab neighbors following unrest in Bahrain by majority Shi’a, which the Bahraini government blamed on Tehran.
